One of the most iconic and beautiful aircraft of all time, the Spitfires glory began with the Battle of Britain, where it outclassed the German aircraft and eclipsed the main British fighter of the day, the Hawker Hurricane.
The Spitfire Mk.IIa was produced at the "shadow" Castle Bromwich factory rather than Supermarine's Southampton plant, Mark II production was just in full swing when the Supermarine works were badly damaged by bombing. The Mark II was powered by the more powerful Merlin XII, giving 1,175 hp, increasing the speed by about 10 mph. This may seem like only a modest gain - but the Merlin XII uses a pressurized glycol/water mixture for cooling, rather than the unpressurized pure glycol system used on earlier Merlins. The new system removes heat from the engine more efficiently and makes possible the later jumps in engine power of the later Merlins. Armament is the same as the Mk I with different IIA and IIB versions having machine guns and cannons respectively. 750 mk IIA and 170 mk IIB were produced.
