The USS Wasp is a modern American multipurpose amphibious assault ship. The ship is 257 m long, 32 m wide and has a full displacement of about 41,000 tons. The maximum speed of the ship is about 22-23 knots. The unit features on-board armament such as: two 20mm Vulcan Phalanx sets, three 25mm Bushmaster cannons or two NATO Sea Sparrow launchers. The ship can also use up to 25-27 manned aircraft.

The USS Wasp is the flagship of the amphibious assault ship class of the same name. The Wasp-class ships were created to replace the Tarawa-class ships, but their construction used a lot of experience gained from their service. The main task of the Wasp ships is amphibious operations. For this purpose, they are adapted to transport about 2,000 soldiers of the US Marine Corps in full equipment, which can be dropped by helicopters, landing barges or hovercrafts, also carried by this type of landing craft. Because of their size, they can act as light aircraft carriers and are adapted to work with AV-8 Harrier II or F-35B Lightning II aircraft. The flagship of this class, the USS Wasp, was built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. It began its combat service in the Mediterranean Sea, and in 1993 operated in the region of Somalia. During the years 2004-2012, the unit was operated less intensively than its sister ships. However, he supported the actions of American troops in Afghanistan in 2004. It is worth adding that during this period the prototypes of the F-35B were tested on the unit. The device is still in active operation.
