During World War II, the Boeing B-17 became synonymous with heavily armed strategic bombers, although with 12,677 aircraft it was by no means the most popular aircraft of its type. It was given its name Flying Fortress by an American journalist after its first flight and stuck with it. The Boeing B-17F was the first mass-produced flying fortress. The most famous machine of this series is the B-17F-10-BO, manufactured by Boeing, which was delivered on 15 July 1942 and entered service with the 324th Bombardment Squadron, 91st Bomber Group at Bassingbourne, England.
