The history of the Leopard 2 dates back to 1963, when the US and West Germany decided to jointly develop a main battle tank. The joint MBT 70 or KPz 70 project failed, but both countries implemented the knowledge gained in the development of their own battle tanks. The US developed the M1 Abrams and Germany the Leopard 2. Looked at this way, the M1 Abrams and the Leopard 2 are quite related. Leopard has been in production for 40 (!) years now
In the A6 version, instead of the previously used 120 mm Rheinmetall L/44 smoothbore gun, the 120 mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun was used, which was about 25% longer and had a higher muzzle velocity. Disadvantages of the gun are some top weight, unfavorable handling in terrain and populated areas, and higher maintenance costs for setup. Other changes relate to the recoil brake, stock mounts, fire control and weapon tracking system, field adjustment system, case bag, and protective tube cover.

The A6 variant entered service in 2001.
