Prototype: The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a twin-engine tandem rotor transport helicopter. Conversely, rotating rotors eliminate the need for a vertical rotor in the tail to balance torque, allowing all of the engine's power to be used to generate lift and propulsion. The main missions performed include the transport of troops, vehicles, weapons and materials. The Chinook has been sold to 16 countries worldwide, with the US Army and Japan's Air Self-Defense Force having the largest arsenals. Other customers include the UK, Egypt, Australia, Greece, Canada, Italy and Thailand, as well as the Netherlands. The helicopter harkens back to the CH-46 Sea Knight and its typical appearance is reminiscent of the "flying banana" Piasecki H-21.
The helicopter, developed by Vertol Aircraft Corporation as the Model 107, won a tender from the US Army in September 1958, but entered serial production only for the US Marine Corps, as the Army was meanwhile interested in a larger model. This was followed in 1959 by the US Army's need for a tactical transport helicopter similar to the CH-46 but larger in size. The CH-47 (Model 114) was then developed. The CH-47D took off on its maiden flight on 11 May 1979. It was equipped with improved rotor blades and new engines and was initially powered by two T55-GA-712 turbines. However, most D-version helicopters now have the T55-GA-714 engine. With its three-hook system, the CH-47D can accommodate up to 10. Lift 500 kg heavy loads such as bulldozers and ISO containers and transport them at speeds over 250 km/h. Payload is about two tons higher than the common twin-engine CH-53. On air strike missions, it often carries a 155 mm M198 howitzer with 30 rounds and a crew of 11 in its operational area. Like most US military helicopters today, the Chinook is equipped with advanced avionics and electronics. The CH-47D was a key part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and the Iraq War. As part of air assault missions, she took large numbers of soldiers to forward positions and provided them with field rations, water and ammunition. It has proven particularly useful in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, where high altitude and temperatures limit the use of other helicopters such as the UH-60 Blackhawk. A total of 635 machines were modernized, about 100 of which were newly built.

Kit: After more than two decades, the current kit returns the CH-47 to the program in 1/144 from Revell. The well-known side-opening carton contains three trays made of gray plastic and one made of clear plastic. The set consists of a total of 104 parts. The kit has a very good reputation among modelers and small scale fans will certainly be happy to see it back on the market.
