The Hawker Hunter was one of the most successful British aircraft of the post-war period. It was used by the RAF in 30 squadrons and was exported to as many as 19 countries. Hawker also buys machines from the original owners and modifies them as fighter-bombers. On July 20, 1951, the first Hunter WB188 flew. Later became the record holder Hunter F.Mk. 3 and set some world records. The first two versions of the F.Mk. 1 (with Rolls Royce Avon) and F.Mk. 2 (with Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire) still had many teething problems, some of which with the F.Mk. 4 (with Avon) and F.Mk. 5 (sapphire) can be cleared. F. Mk. 6 with Avon engine and revised wing. Series production began in 1955 for the RAF and for the Netherlands and Belgium. For the RAF 383 F.Mk. 6 built. In Holland another 93 F.Mk. 6 under license and in Belgium there were at least 144 copies. Aircraft from both countries were purchased by Hawker after the Lockheed F-104G was introduced there, upgraded and successfully resold. The FGA 9 was a Mk.6 optimized for ground combat missions. So this version got a brake parachute over the engine in the stern and the improved Avon 207 engine. It not only flew with the RAF but was also exported very successfully. In 1958, Switzerland ordered 100 of the Mk 58 version. This was suitable as a fighter and fighter-bomber. It wasn't until 1994 that the last Swiss Hunters went out of service. after the Lockheed F-104G was introduced there, upgraded and successfully sold again.
